The Facebook LIKE button
In Kenya, it is said that every market has its own madman. But Facebook has so many mad people you would need to conduct a full census just to get an estimate.
I bumped into a picture online of a Libyan who has been brutally killed by a 50mm bullet and whose brains are spread all over the road, with his skull half open and what do I find on the FB comment box? Almost 200 People like this! And am sure the number is still increasing.
(Here is the link to that picture. Pretty graphic and gross. STRICTLY NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED.)
The dictionary defines the word like as
1. To find pleasant or attractive; enjoy.
2. To have an inclination or a preference.
3. Scots To be pleased.
And so I have to ask. What part of LIKE dont people understand? Someone posts, "Feeling so sad. Lost my mom. RIP dear mum" and you find people LIKING that. Unless someone sells coffins or runs a morgue, whats there to like when someone loses a relative. Or maybe that someone eats dead people and are rejoicing at the prospect of new found food.
Its ridiculous to say the least.
Or, someone else posts, "Bad accident. Lost my legs. Feels so sad" And some idiot LIKES that. Whats there to like when a person lost his legs? Unless maybe the idiot found them and stocked them away as an extra pair. Or had short ones that he was happy to replace.
Somethings dont have ANY REASON to like them. Sickness, deaths, misfortunes and the like are not things to get you all excited to hit the LIKE button. Unless you are a sociopath or something. If someone updates their status on Facebook as, "Doc says I have Cancer ... why would someone LIKE that? Seriously. You'd think they feeds on tumors.
Word of advice to those people who LIKE everything. The LIKE button does not feel lonely or discriminated against when you ignore it. Its not a baby that needs your constant attention. It does not cry or whine when not attended to. You dont have to keep pressing it. It does not increase your bonga points, your years on this earth or anything. Its just a button to show that you found something PLEASANT.
I sure hope the culprits understand this message. Have a likeable day.
